The sound of taps fills the air today
as another brave soldier is laid away.
His friends and family all gathered here,
hearts filled with pain, eyes filled with tears.
For his country he courageously fought,
freedom for the land he loved his only thought.
He signed up as soon as he turned eighteen,
since a young child it had been his dream.
To be like his Grandpa and his Pappy too,
follow in their footsteps is what he wanted to do.
Unlike them, his dream ended much too soon,
last May, on Memorial Day, he was buried at noon.
The freedoms you share are not free,
all come with a price for you and me.
All gave some, some gave all,
many have their names engraved on a wall.
Take the time to remember our military today,
the ones still fighting, the ones laid away.
The families grieving all across this land,
thank a soldier for their service and shake their hand.
Grateful am I for a man such as he,
for giving his life for my liberty.
I stand here and place a flag on his grave,
in the land of the free because of the brave.
